Went to Curry Hyuga for lunch around 12.45 pm on a Saturday. We had to drive around a bit for parking. We got a table for 2 immediately. The service was quick (got our water, orders placed, check quickly). I got the yuzu lemonade which was amazing! The food took a while to come out, but it was worth the wait. I got the vegetarian korogge curry. This includes a corn and onion filled potato croquette, which was crisp and delicious, rice, some potato salad (good), pickled veggies, shredded cabbage and the curry. The quantity was a lot! Couldn't finish the rice and curry! They had a bunch of different chilli powder condiments as well. Overall, it was a pretty satisfying meal!
My friend recommended this place, so my spouse and I decided to check it out. We ordered the Chicken Karaage on the side. This tasted great, though hot, so I recommend taking small bites to avoid burning your mouth. The meat was moist while the crisp was light and flaky. The cabbage was standard fare, so it lacked flavor and had a light veggie crunch. There was some kind of creamy sauce or potato salad on the plate, which was also pretty good and tasted a little bit like mayonnaise. We also ordered the Kakuni Curry, which was okay. The flavor was good though not exactly what I was looking for. It is important to note that I'm generally not into Japanese curry. However, the standout item in this dish was the pork. It was so tender it basically melted in your mouth. Overall, the place does a great job of having reusables (see notes below) and excellent meat. If I ever come back, I would likely only get the Chicken Kaarage because it was probably one of the best ones I've ever had. ECO NOTES (Dine-In) Dine-In Dishware: Reusable plates and bowls Napkins: Single-use disposable paper napkin (in a dispenser, so you have the option to use your own or, if you do need a napkin, it's more efficient at giving you the amount of napkin you truly need) Utensils: Metal fork and spoon Water cups: Short metal cups
Ambiance: super casual sit down spot Service: nice and attentive Food: worth the price Corn Soup ($5) - it's sweet, flavorful, light, but so comforting and warms your tummy. If you love corn, get this!! Signature Curry ($16) - comes with shredded cabbage, potato salad, and fukujin pickles I loved how the katsu was perfectly crispy, but I did find the pork one to be dry and kinda tough. The chicken was juicier and tender! They offer 5 level of spices and you can just sprinkle them on your curry! If you can eat the buldak ramen, you can handle their level 5 spice Solid Japanese curry spot!
The curry and katsu here are soooo good! I haven't had Japanese curry with katsu in a while and this hit the spot 100%. The flavor of the curry is delicious with the perfect seasonings and spices. I got spicy level 2 as someone who likes eating spicy sometimes and it was the perfect amount of heat to not overpower my taste buds. This is my experience based on my to go order.
Dropped in for a late lunch. There was no seating issues but took a bit of time to find parking. I had the Katsu Curry made with Tonkatsu (pork). Chicken katsu is also available. The Tonkatsu was a nice thick cut of pork - it was juicy and crunchy and stood up nicely to the rich, aromatic curry sauce. This dish came with a small scoop of potato salad and fukujin pickles. It was so good! If you are not in the mood for curry, they also have a meal set option and KatsuDon and Beef Hayashi Om Rice set that also looked interesting. Staff was pleasant and are meals were served quickly.
Great restaurant for Japanese curry! Come hungry because the portions are huge! Food: Corn potage soup: 5/5 soup was warm and very flavorful. Perfect flavor balance between corn and potato. Soup itself was smooth and had kernels of corn in it for added texture. The soup also comes with a side of croutons that can be added in. Chicken karage: 4/5 chicken was juicy and tender. Portion was great. Comes with tartar sauce only. I wish it came with other dipping sauces such as a soy based one. Signature katsu curry: 4/5 the pork loin was crispy and very juicy. The curry itself was intense and super flavorful. Meat and rice portions were very generous. The plate also comes with a side of potato salad. The potato salad was equally tasty. However, the portion for the potato salad was very small compared to the rest of the dish. I wish there was more potato salad to the dish. Parking: metered street parking. There are nearby parking garages too. Between the two I usually don't have any trouble finding parking. Service: 5/5 staff was friendly and quick to respond to any of your needs. Food came out quick as well. Overall great restaurant and I would return again.
Street parking. Metered right outside. Can be rough depending on time of day. Service is friendly. Food came out fairly fast. Depending on time you come, there may be a wait. Come here if you like your curries on the sweeter end. Everything was as expected, good flavor. Solid food. Kaarage Chicken Curry (4/5) Chicken is juicy, nicely fried. My parents enjoyed their choices: katsu curry and the tonkatsu set plate. Portions are alright. Would come back if in the area and craving curry.
If you're craving curry or Japanese curry, you should definitely pay this place a visit. The portions are generous, and the prices are affordable. Food: The Chicken Katsu Curry was delicious and tender, with a crispy coating to my liking. I also tried the Chicken Karaage as an add-on, and it was equally great. It was a different cut of chicken and was also juicy. (I had to take some in to-go boxes since I couldn't finish it all.) The Corn Potage Soup was unique and delicious. I love corn, so I gave it a try and was not disappointed. It was sweet, salty, and warm, with little croutons that added a different texture. Super good. Service: The staff were friendly and quick to bring what we needed. They brought the soup first, so we had something to munch on before the main dishes. We had seasoning and tissues on the table, which were a plus. There's also a bathroom if you need it. Ambience: The restaurant had a cozy, brick-walled interior that reminded me a bit of New York. The table was clean when we arrived. They have a mix of booths and wooden chairs. Great atmosphere overall.
It's been over 6 months since my last visit and so it is worthy of an updated review. They recently expanded to other cities, but I still prefer their original peninsula location. Even on a weeknight they were busy and I needed to wait for a table, albeit less than a 15 minute wait. Our server was quick to take our order, minutes after being seated. There's not a lot of variety on the menu other than varieties of protein served with your curry--and some appetizers to go with the curry & a limited selection of non-curry items. I got the karaage curry and my friend ordered the signature katsu curry. My curry came with 5 pieces of karaage--doesn't seem like much, but they were fairly big pieces of chicken on a bed of rice and plenty of curry--it was filling. Even with the passage of time, this is still a great place for Japanese comfort food.
My friends and I came here on a Friday night and was able to grab a table right away. Yay to no waiting because we were hungry AF. The corn soup seemed to be a popular item so I ordered a bowl with the tonkatsu curry. My friends ordered a tonkatsu curry and chicken curry. Each table had a condiment holder containing 5 differen't pepper shakers. Some of the peppers included jalapeno, wiri wiri and pequin. They're labeled accordingly, with 1 being mild spice to 5 being 'burn your booty HOT'. My mom didn't train me on spice so I didn't care for any of the peppers. My friend sampled the first two to add some zizzle zazzle to her curry. Our plates came out in a timely manner with my corn soup coming out first. It was nicely presented in a ceramic witches' cauldron type bowl with croutons on the side. The soup was super hot and it was thick and creamy. Really hit the spot on a cold evening. It was delicious! The tonkatsu was perfectly cooked, the rice was plentiful and the curry was just aight. There was a mild sweet taste to it, which was unexpected. I wasn't the biggest fan of it it because I prefer my curry to be more on the savory side. I'm guessing they use caramelized yellow onions in their sauce, which gives off a sweet taste. The curry also came with a soup potato salad which I enjoyed and fukujin pickles. The portion was generous and I couldn't finish the whole thing, so I took the rest to go. My friend wasn't a fan of the sweet taste of the curry either, it was the first thing she mentioned when she took a bite. My other friend seemed to enjoy his chicken curry. Overall, curry hyuga was okay. I'd give them a 3.5 but bump up the stars to a 4 because the service was fast and the prices were reasonable for the amount you pay. The shop is small so plan accordingly if you're rolling 6 people deep because they add 18% gratuities to your bill. I wouldn't mind coming back if I was in the area. I'd like to try the teishoku rice plate or katsu don and get the corn soup again. I would pass on the curry even though it's a curry house.
